Ferrous metals are susceptible to corrosion in the presence of air and water, a process that is accelerated by the presence of H2S, sulfides, and other contaminants. In order to protect the integrity of storage tanks and pipelines, most petroleum products are required to be non-corrosive to ferrous metals. In fuel systems, steel piping and storage vessels can corrode and rust when both water and air contaminate the fuel. Water can contaminate fuel through refinery processes such as water washing, caustic processing, salt drying or through condensation of water from the air. Entrainment of air during pumping, mixing or blending operations can introduce oxygen that contributes to corrosion.
